DESIGN PROCESS
Suzannah Marriott Miller
When creating a new design project I turn to my sketchbook which enables me to develop original ideas, innovative textures and exciting colour palettes. Using a combination of mixed media materials can help bring exciting ideas to a costume design. Some of my favourite materials are wax crayons, oil pastels, inks and using unusual objects to create patterns; Using sticks for example as the paint brush. Below are examples of my creative sketchbook work for textile design and costume.
This star sketchbook shows a verity of mixed media techniques, presented in a unique hand made sketchbook.
Layering a photograph, ink splattered tracing paper and a template of a butterfly. Mixing randome materials.
Using colours from a photograph as the palette, creating a more textured page to a sketchbook collection. Printing with materials found at the location of the photograph.
Starting with a photograph to create an interesting design with mixed media.
Using chart paper as my background paper when painting this fishing wheel, original idea sourced from a photograph.
Mimicking similar patterns in the rusted fabric with oil pastels.
Using a stick, dipped in ink to paint a flower. Then using a straw to disperse the ink.
Smudging acrylic paint across a large sheet of paper and using the end of a paint brush to add markings.
Crinkled chart paper and oil pastels with water colour paints. Layered with a mixture of dry media and embroidered french knots.
